In children, acute diarrhea is divided with
fever &
bloody stool:
- Bloody, febrile diarrhea: bacterial enteritis, pseudomembranous colitis
- Bloody, afebrile diarrhea: intussusception(currant jelly stool), hemolytic uremic symptoms, pseudomembranous colitis, viral enteritis
- Non-bloody diarrhea (febrile/afebrile): viral enteritis
Food poisoning:
timing of symptoms is important
- Within 6 hours: Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus
- At 8~16 hours: Clostridium perfringens
- More than 16 hours: viral or bacterial infection
- Diarrhea→ fever→ headache/ muscle aches: Listeria monocytogenes
